'Here Dead We Lie' is a co-production between Mark Allen and Professor Mark Connelly and Dr Helen Brooks of the University of Kent. The trio have worked together since 2019 to develop this exhibition, building on work that Brooks and Connelly undertook throughout the centenary of the Great War as leads on the Gateways to the First World War project, hosted by the University of Kent.

This photographic exhibition features images from memorial sites across the Western Front in France and Belgium, taken by Mark Allen, an amateur photographer and battlefield guide.

The collection of beautiful photographs span the seasons, prompting reflections on the nature of warfare as well as exploring themes of loss, grief, commemoration and landscape in both colour and black and white imagery.

Accompanying the exhibition is an audio soundscape, drawing on the images of the exhibition and connecting these to the lesser-known poetry of the Great War. Recordings of the poetry have been made by members of Dover Youth Theatre, and the soundscape has been designed by film-maker and Ross Barnwell.

To offer additional context to the work, a free booklet produced by Mark Allen, Professor Mark Connelly and Dr Helen Brooks will also be available to guide you through the exhibition.

Following its launch at the Horsebridge, 'Here Dead We Lie' will be hosted by Passchendaele Memorial Museum near Ieper, in Belgium.

This exhibition made possible with the support of the David Family Foundation
