Simon takes a limited number of students through the processes involved in producing a large close-focus drawing of the face, either their own or someone who has had an impact on their life.

The technique employed involves using charcoal and oiled charcoal on high quality Italian paper. The emphasis at the start is on accuracy using tried and tested methods such as measuring and using a grid.

The class then opens out to the stage of adding tone and detail to the drawing which is largely where the individual identity of the relationship with the subject unfolds.

The impact of a large tonal portrait of the face cannot be overstated. Simon takes you through the journey of making this a reality, helping you avoid the pitfalls on the way.

The day is aimed at students familiar with using art materials that said, if you want to jump in and give it your best shot Simon will do his best to make it successful.

By the end of the class you should be well on your way to having a large portrait of sufficient quality to put on display in your place of residence with the skills to produce many more!
