During the 1970s and 80s the East Village was the heart of New York’s art and music scene.
A generation of young artists were making work that resonates today – and they were making it in the face of institutional indifference, government hostility and the devastation of AIDS, which would claim so many of their lives.
This is their story, with a special focus on David Wojnarowicz (1954-92), who was maybe the most brilliant of them all. I was there and this is my report.
