Winning at life
This exhibition asks the viewer to look at a series large paintings of famous boxing heroes and think about their various mental health struggles.

The viewer is being asked to think about these male icons and what it’s like for them as men to dedicate themselves to winning, when winning is everything.

Often seen as ‘gods’ in their day, there are a dozen images of famous, or infamous, boxing legends who have been ‘knocked out’ by life either during or after their boxing careers.

Each boxer will have some biographical details about their experience which will help the viewer think about what its like to be invincible and ‘vincible’.

This exhibition is not about punching boxing ‘below the belt’. Boxing is a proud sport that often is seen as something that enables men and women to become fit, toughen up, learn discipline, defend themselves, escape from poverty and many other positive attributes.

There is a common link to mental health issues and high level sport. This seems most acute in pugilist sports like boxing for various reasons explored in the exhibition.

‘Boxing Men’ a metaphor for maleness and men ‘slugging it out’ and champions who have ended up ‘on the ropes’.
