‘Think of Me’ was a 2018 Horsebridge Centre led participatory project to remember the soldiers from Whitstable who lost their lives during the First World War.

Using the 179 names on the town’s Civic War Memorial as a starting point, we worked with volunteers to research the personal heritages of these men and in doing so uncovered an additional 112 names with links to the town. These discoveries enabled us to begin to compile the first complete record of all men with a local connection to Whitstable who died as a result of the conflict.

With the help of local organisations, schools and members of the community we created hand sewn personalised sweetheart pin cushions for each of the servicemen, using the soldier’s individual stories as inspiration. The2018 exhibition of hearts was accompanied by a biography for each soldier and all the research found during the project.

The heart pin cushions will be available to purchase for a suggested donation and proceeds will go towards furthering low cost and free creative activities in the centre, with a % of any donations going to the Royal British Legion who supported the original project.

This will also be an opportunity to let everyone know about our latest heritage community project 'Their war, our story' to help local families research, retell and capture WW1 stories that would otherwise be lost in time.
