Today we are remembering artist Ben Sands who would have been 101 today.
In gallery 2 you can currently see a collection of his exquisite original and edition pieces, that celebrate the life and work of this treasured local printmaker.
In this much anticipated exhibition, you will have the opportunity to view a rarely seen collection of exquisitely detailed lino and wood cut prints, many depicting archetypal scenes of Whitstable life, capturing perfectly the bustle and beauty of the town. We have been lucky enough to have on loan some of Ben’s original sketchbooks and early works alongside some more recognisable later prints.
Ben was also an accomplished typographic designer and examples of his characterful and distinctive imagery printed for books and publications under the name ‘Shoestring Press’ are also on display.
Special thanks to Mat Sands, Chris Stone and Ben Dickson for working with the Horsebridge to realise this exhibition and the David Family Foundation whose support made this show possible.
