Jazz at The Horsebridge is a new monthly event celebrating the best of live jazz in all its forms. To be held on Sunday evenings, each month will feature a different performer from across the jazz, blues and world music spectrum. Featuring top notch vocalists and musicians from across the county and beyond, Jazz at the Horsebridge is an exciting new addition to the Horsebridge performance calendar and to the Whitstable music scene.

With a tremendous passion for vocal and instrumental jazz, Broad Reach Records presents a fantastic range of high-calibre artists, led by Artistic Director Kai Hoffman.

Resident in the USA, we are excited to have the multi-award-winning vocalist Christine Tobin and acclaimed guitarist Phil Robson at our Whitstable jazz club! The duo are currently touring their new show The Long Road – a rich, genre-crossing programme exploring journey, growth, and resilience, which has met with great critical acclaim around North America. This intimate and expressive set blends Tobin’s original compositions with reimagined works by Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Paul Simon, alongside stunning musical settings of poetry by WB Yeats and Paul Muldoon. Their signature sound features Tobin’s warm, soulful voice and Robson’s inventive guitar work, brought together with exhilarating improvisation and deeply personal arrangements.

Christine Tobin, celebrated for her distinctive artistry, has received a BBC Jazz Award, the Ivors Composer Award (formerly BASCA), and the Parliamentary Jazz Award for Vocalist of the Year. She has recorded 12 albums, performed globally, and worked with artists such as Kenny Wheeler, Nigel Kennedy, and Gabriel Byrne.

Phil Robson is an award-winning guitarist known for his collaborations with legends like David Liebman, Barbra Streisand, and Django Bates. He co-led the acclaimed UK band Partisans for over two decades and is a Whirlwind Recordings artist with global recognition.

Together, Tobin and Robson craft performances that are soulful, inventive, and emotionally resonant.

British Jazz Award-winning Derek Nash - bandleader, composer, arranger, record producer and engineer - is one of the UK’s busiest jazz musicians. He is leader of six bands, each with its own unique sound and featuring some of the top jazz musicians in the UK today.

 

Derek has been a full-time member of the Jools Holland Rhythm & Blues Orchestra since 2004 and is also a member of the Ronnie Scott’s Blues Explosion. With these bands, he has enjoyed sharing the stage with many great artists including Tom Jones, Eric Clapton, David Sanborn, Jack Bruce, Amy Winehouse, Michael Buble and Sir Paul McCartney. He is one of the most in-demand and respected guest instrumentalists for jazz clubs across the UK and has received numerous nominations in the British Jazz Awards. In the jazz-funk world he has performed with David Benoit, Brian Culbertson, Ernie Watts, Mezzoforte, Nelson Rangell and Don and Dave Grusin.
Derek is a prolific composer, regularly penning compositions for his various bands and undertaking commissions. He has also composed for television and radio. As an arranger, and following in the footsteps of his father, Pat Nash (who was an arranger for the BBC Northern Dance Orchestra) Derek has worked for many major artists including Jools Holland, Annie Lennox, David Sanborn, Nile Rogers, Gregory Porter and Chaka Khan.

 

In addition to his own recordings, Derek has also guested with other major artists including Don Grusin, Jack Bruce, Bob Dorough, Rumer and Shakatak. As a record producer and engineer, Derek received a gold disc for his work with Jamie Cullum for his ‘Pointless Nostalgic’ album and has recorded some of the leading UK jazz artists including Stan Tracey, Bobby Wellins, Georgie Fame, George Melly, Alan Barnes, Geoff Gascoyne and Digby Fairweather.

Immy Churchill is one of the UK’s most exciting young jazz voices — a vocalist, lyricist and singer-songwriter already making waves across the UK and European jazz scenes. Hailed as a “rising star”, she has performed at the country’s most iconic venues including Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express Live, and The Vortex, and tours regularly in Germany and Switzerland.

A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, Immy has collaborated with leading artists such as Emma Rawicz, Lukas DeRungs, Florian Arbenz, and Greg Osby, with projects leading to acclaimed recording opportunities including Emma Rawicz’s ACT release Chroma. Her creative partnerships continue to flourish, sparking new ventures with Florian Arbenz and Greg Osby while simultaneously developing her own distinctive voice as a songwriter.

Alongside curating The Downstairs Living Room Series at The Vortex Jazz Club, Immy has been steadily building her solo work. Her debut release, Give Me Time To Breathe, will be unveiled in June 2025, marking a new and compelling chapter in her career.

For this special performance, Immy invites you to share an evening of song with her close collaborators Dom Howard (guitar)and Scottie Thompson (keyboard) — both fellow Royal Academy graduates and exceptional performers in their own right. The trio draws on a wealth of influences from jazz, folk, and the singer-songwriter tradition, blending improvisation and poetry into a unique sound-world. Expect an intimate journey through standards, folk songs, and original compositions inspired by John Taylor, Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, and Norma Winstone — all filtered through the group’s ethereal, story-driven approach.

Multi award-winning guitarist Jim Mullen, has worked with many artists, in a career spanning more than 5 decades, across Europe and the US, touring and recording with artists including Brian Auger, Gene Harris, Jimmy Smith, Mose Allison, Herbie Mann, Terry Callier, Georgie Fame, Van Morrison, Claire Martin. 

Jim Mullen also shared a 15 year musical partnership with great saxophonist Dick Morrissey, in the much loved British band Morrissey Mullen.

 

Jim has recorded many albums under his own name in quartet and trio formats. Mullen's album "Volunteers" recorded with 9 piece all star UK Line up led by Gareth Lockrane, recording many of his own compositions from earlier albums, was a particular highlight.  Tonight he will be performing with his organ trio featuring great musicians Mike Gorman organ and Tristan Mailliot drums.
